Use of Airborne Remote Sensing to Map and Monitor Coral Reefs

Example of Use of Airborne Remote Sensing image
Aerial photography merged with SHOALS lidar bathymetry showing southern portion of Moloka'i. Requires 3D glasses for proper viewing.

Western Region Geography is using remotely sensed imaging to help map and study coral reef environments. Aerial photographs and airborne digital imaging, including SHOALS (Scanning Hydrographic Operational Airborne Lidar Survey) laser bathymetry data covering portions of the island of Moloka'i, Hawai'i, are being used. The work is funded by the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program and involves staff from both Geography and Geology Disciplines, as well as the National Park Service and the University of Hawai'i..
