NLCD 2006 is being produced using a model of change detection developed by NOAA, a partner agency in the project. Satellite imagery from 2001 and 2006 is compared and areas identified as change are extracted. The change areas are then classified according to NLCD 2001 methods. The classified change areas will be integrated into the NLCD 2001 base map to produce NLCD 2006. WGSC is participating in this project by interpreting land cover change in areas of the western United States.
Figure A and B: Landsat subset scenes from 2001(a) and 2006 (b) in the San Diego California area. The 2001 subset image captures an area of land that has been cleared (pink). In 2006, the same area reveals urban development, new vegetation growth and road networks in the residential area.
